Some hills preserve more than landscapes they preserve the stories of countless generations.
Perched atop Santegudda in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district is an extraordinary rock shelter whose walls have served as a canvas for people across different periods of human history. Layer upon layer of paintings offer a rare glimpse into the region’s prehistoric and historic past. While many of the older motifs, created in red ochre, have gradually faded with time, othersĀ believed to belong to more recent historical periods remain remarkably vibrant.
The significance of Santegudda extends far beyond its rock art. The surrounding landscape is equally rich in archaeological heritage. Ash mounds, ancient habitation sites, evidence of iron-working, and numerous archaeological remains together paint the picture of a landscape that has continuously attracted human communities for thousands of years.
To help reveal the finer details of the paintings, we have carefully enhanced selected images while preserving their original character. Even so, what is shown here represents only a small fraction approximately 20% of the remarkable artwork preserved within this shelter.
Every figure, line, and symbol is a reminder that these hills have witnessed centuries of human life, creativity, and adaptation. There are undoubtedly many more stories waiting to be documented, studied, and protected.
Join us as we continue exploring and documenting Karnataka’s extraordinary archaeological heritage – one hidden landscape at a time.
