Every meaningful discovery begins with a moment of curiosity.
During what was meant to be a brief stop near Malyavantha Hill in Hampi, our attention was drawn to an unassuming rock shelter. What initially seemed like an ordinary feature of the landscape soon revealed something far more significant traces of Karnataka’s prehistoric past, quietly preserved and hidden in plain sight.
The region has been extensively researched by Dr. Sharanabasappa Kolkar of Gangavathi, whose Kannada publication, Shilayugada Gavi Chitragalu, documents the area’s remarkable rock art heritage. His work has played an important role in recording and preserving these invaluable cultural remains.
Inspired by our observations during this visit, we have shared our findings with the concerned authorities for further investigation. We hope this contributes, in however small a way, to the continued study and protection of this remarkable heritage.
Experiences like these remind us that some of history’s greatest stories are not found in museums or textbooks, but in the landscapes around us waiting for someone to pause, observe, and ask questions.
