Deccan Herald Reports on Gadag Rock Art Discovery | Project SKaAT

Sometimes, putting a site on the map is only the beginning.

We came across what appeared to be a possible new archaeological site during our assignment in Neelagunda, Gadag. Before sharing the discovery publicly, we took the responsible step of discussing it with historian Dr. K. B. Shivatarak and informing the concerned Department.

That initial step led to further investigation and additional discoveries at the site, including inscriptions, adding greater significance to what had first appeared to be a possible rock-art site.

The response has been incredible.

The story was subsequently picked up by newspapers, bringing wider attention to the site. The Department is now carrying out a thorough inspection and further investigation to understand, document and assess its archaeological significance.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who shared the story, left a comment or reached out with information. Every share and conversation helps bring attention to heritage sites that might otherwise remain overlooked.

But discovery is only the first step. Protection and responsible visitation are equally important.

If you visit such sites, please do so responsibly. Avoid touching or damaging rock paintings and inscriptions, do not remove anything from the site, and help preserve these places for future generations.

The more responsibly we bring these forgotten heritage sites into the public eye, the harder they become to overlook- and the greater the opportunity to protect them.
