A popular sunset spot with a secret that dates back nearly 2,000–3,000 years.
Just about a kilometre south of Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, a small hill in Bandekodigehalli, Bengaluru Rural, is home to one of the few remaining megalithic dolmens in the area.
Today, the hill is a familiar gathering spot for locals who visit to enjoy the evening sunset. Yet, standing quietly on the same hill is an ancient stone structure that holds a fascinating connection to the region’s distant past.
Known as a megalithic dolmen, this structure was built using massive stone slabs, carefully arranged to create a chamber-like formation. Dating back approximately 2,000–3,000 years, it is a remarkable reminder of the megalithic traditions that once existed across this region.
Despite its age and archaeological significance, the dolmen continues to stand relatively unnoticed, with many visitors perhaps unaware of the history surrounding them.
It is fascinating to think that a place people visit today to enjoy a beautiful sunset was once part of a landscape shaped by communities who lived thousands of years ago.
Sometimes, ancient history isn’t tucked away in museums or hidden deep within forests. Sometimes, it’s right where we go to watch the sunset.
Location: Bandekodigehalli, Bengaluru Rural, Karnataka.
